Box Score After an inspired effort yesterday, the College of Staten Island men's baseball team was bounced in non-league play, falling to visiting New Jersey City University, 15-2, in a single game played earlier today at the CSI Baseball Complex. The win lifted the visiting Gothic Knights to 6-7, while the Dolphins fell to 6-5 overall. Both teams have not begun conference play to date.
The going got tough early for the Dolphins who surrendered four runs on the same amount of hits before ever getting a turn at the plate. Jordan Tetrick and Francisco Ramirez tattooed CSI starter James Mardikos for a two-RBI doubles, doing the heart of the damage. After NJCU starter Jeff Karczewski got the Dolphins down in their half of the first in order, the Knights blistered off another five runs in the second frame.
Eddie Gonzalo got the rally started with a base hit and Michael Fiorentino plated him a few batters later, before Ramirez stroked another two-RBI double down the line. That lifted Mardikos in favor of Richard Anderson, who promptly gave up two runs on an Alex Mena double, charged to Mardikos.
Anderson did settle in relief, giving up just a pair of earned runs of 4.2 innings of relief, fanning a trio. The lofty cushion, however, gave NJCU all the insurance they would need. Karczewski was touched for only two runs on five CSI hits over seven innings of work, fanning six. CSI scored both of their runs with two outs in the fifth inning. Devon DiCasoli stroked an RBI double to plate Cory Sullivan, then scored on a Steve Hession single.
Up 10-2, NJCU added another run in the sixth, and four more in the seventh off of CSI reliever Tom Matson.
Ramirez finished the game for NJCU a sensational 4-of-6 with 5 RBI and three runs scored while teammate Ken Witte went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. CSI's Pat Gale had the only multi-hit game for the Dolphins going 2-for-4 to raise his season batting average to .367. He also pitched a scoreless ninth inning, fanning two.
The Dolphins will be right back to action taking on Maine – Preque Isle, tomorrow at 3:30pm for a single, non-conference, affair.
